Update on AFLW listed players for ThunderW

Today AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) CEO, Stuart Totham and AFLNT Manager of Talent and Pathways Wally Gallio, met with AFL Victoria (AFL Vic) CEO Steven Reaper and AFL Vic Competitions Manager, John Hook to discuss the NT Thunder women’s team.

Last week AFL Vic issued NT Thunder with a directive to play less AFLW players based out of Adelaide for the remainder of the 2018 Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s season.

Totham and Gallio travelled to Melbourne overnight in an attempt to seek further clarity and understanding.

In a productive meeting, both parties gained a greater appreciation of each other’s position.

“It was a positive meeting in which we developed a better understanding of their views and issues and gave them more insight into ours.

“Subsequently, we have been asked to go away and work on a list management plan that takes into account the remainder of the season. Once we present that back to AFL Vic later this week we expect we will have a more definitive answer on how many AFLW players we can include in our weekly line-up,” Totham said.

To-date NT Thunder has abided by the VFL W bylaws and license agreement and has played 22 out of a possible 28 local NT players (not including the four locally based AFLW players).

Until a final judgment on the number of permitted AFLW players in the NT Thunder women’s team is made, there will be no further comment. That decision is expected in time for this weekend’s Round 8 game in Darwin.
