NT Thunder player Kieren Parnell was awarded the NEAFL Rising Star nomination after his outstanding performance in the Round 12 Red Centre clash against Aspley.

Parnell, finishing the game with 18 disposals, five marks and four rebound 50s, is the first NT Thunder player to be nominated for the award this year which is presented to the most promising young talent in the NEAFL competition.

Playing nine out of a possible 10 games for NT Thunder this season after coming back from numerous knee injuries, Parnell said he was just happy to finally be back on the field.

“I was itching to get back out there during pre-season, that’s what drove me, and to finally be back out there is rewarding, especially to play in the back line with the likes of Rioli and Weetra.

“Continuing to play good footy and have an injury free season is the main goal for the next nine rounds, along with success for the team,” said Parnell.

NT Thunder Head Coach, Darren Reeves, commented on Parnell’s performance saying it was a great reward for the 20-year-old who has shown outstanding resilience throughout his career to date and keeps improving week after week.

“He (Parnell) played an outstanding game on the weekend, his ability to cover ground with swift leg speed and take the game on is special.

“The effort put in off the field around preparation and recovery shows in his performance on the field in the way he plays with composure and poise,” Reeves said.
