Coach's column Round 8 2018

Our aim is to improve and develop each player

What an exciting day last Saturday was for NT Thunder and Territory football, for the first time in the club’s short history we had both our male and female sides playing at home on the same day.

Our VFL W squad kicked off the day with a very impressive 72-point win over Essendon. The women continued the good form they showed in Round 1, playing a fast and exciting brand of footy. The defensive pressure they applied was outstanding, not allowing the Bombers to score after quarter time.

The NEAFL squad followed and ground out a 37-point win against AFL reserve side, Gold Coast Suns. The first half was a real arm wrestle before the boys stepped up a gear in the second half. Darren Ewing and Adam Sambono again proving to be a lethal pair inside 50, combining for eight goals. And though we had some contributors throughout the night, it was not a complete four-quarter effort. To challenge the top sides in the competition, we must fix this area.

It was pleasing to get the win after three disappointing losses, but after any game, we review the game as a group and identify areas for improvement. The use of match vision and multiple camera angles to give coaches and players best opportunity to recognise what we did well or more importantly, what we must do better. Our reviews are done on a Tuesday night before training. These reviews generally run for no longer than 15 minutes, in which the players drive the conversation. Discussing and providing feedback as to what they see in the vision.

Further to this, each player has access to game vision within 24 hours after a match. Players can view their edits that we have coded for them on their smartphones or devices. They’re encouraged to review their performance by watching vision, then give a written review on what they feel needs to improve before our next game. All this is done online, followed by the coach’s review and comments. This goes towards our aim of continuously trying to work on improving and developing each player on and off the field.

Hopefully we come away with the win this weekend so that the reviews are on the positive side!
