Coach's Column Round 9

Strong Focus on Respect – Round 9

26.05.17 15:20

This weeks NEAFL round 9 coincides with the AFL‘s Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous round and NT Thunder will proudly wear our Indigenous designed jumper to honour the occasion.

The Indigenous guernsey for the last three years has been based on the artwork “Wolma” by Clinton Gaykamangu. The story of the Wolma goes back to the unknown sisters. The Wagilak myth tells of the Dreamtime and of the travels of two sisters known as Wagilak who left the southern part of Arnhem Land and journeyed towards the northeast before awakening Yulungurr , the great olive python who brought down the rains. Wolma is a storm cloud that each year brings the wet season with the thunder. To hear the full story behind the Wolma artwork I encourage you to visit the NT Thunder website and watch the video narrated by Breadon McLean.

After a tough win away in wet conditions last week at Southport, it’s great to get home to take on the GWS Giants. Taking the four points against Southport was important, as it brought our first back-to-back wins of 2017.

It was an impressive team performance, with many contributors. Abraham Ankers, Cam Ilett and Tom Davies all lead from the front in a hard fought contested game. Another five goals from Adam Sambono and two from Hugo Drogemuller puts us in a positive win-loss ratio.

The feeling amongst the group is one of determination to make an impact in the competition. Over the past month we have had a strong focus on the word ‘respect’.

Internally we earn respect at every training session and every game where the players strive to gain the esteem of their teammates. Externally our performance in games earns respect from our opposition and the competition. Our effort and attitude define who we are, and what we want to achieve.

This weekend we get the opportunity to earn it while wearing a jumper that signifies so much to us. We hope to put in a performance worthy of your respect.
