Coach's Column Round 5

We feel ready to go again – Round 5

28.04.17 13:29

Another big challenge awaits our young group in Round 5. It’s Friday night footy, under lights at TIO Stadium against a professional Sydney Swans outfit.

Tonight’s game presents another chance for our young exciting Territory talent to take on last year’s NEAFL runner-up side.

Already three games into the 2017 season and we can see some positive signs with this year’s group. As always the ever-reliable experienced players in Cameron Ilett, Darren Ewing, Daniel Weetra, Justin Beugelaar and Shannon Rioli have had impressive starts to the season. As equally impressive has been the form from our younger players, including Nick Yarran, Michael Coombes, Abe Ankers, Adam Sambono and Sam Smith.

After last week’s tough fought win against the Redlands Bombers, the side has regained some confidence going into tonight’s game. Interestingly, it is our first Friday night game since Round 5, 2014. And though the turnaround after a trip away is shorter than we’re used to we feel ready to go again.

The young Thunder brigade are eager to make an impact within the side and have so far shown positive signs to suggest it’s possible. To date I have been impressed by our squad’s professional approach to training, game preparation and recovery. This professionalism will become critical if we are to challenge the Swans tonight.

A game like the one tonight provides us the opportunity to showcase our depth and flair in the best of circumstances. The Swans are fielding numerous players with AFL experience in Aliir Aliir, Brandon Jack, Michael Talia and Jeremy Laidler, all of which present for some interesting match-ups.

A couple of our more experienced guys, including Ryan Smith and Matthew Rosier, will miss due to circumstance and injury. But with misfortune comes opportunity and the door is wide open for the likes of Kyle Emery and Kyle Kossack, who have earned their spot on the team, to make their mark.

Get down early to support the Thunder Juniors program, they are the future NT stars. Entry is free until 6:30pm and then hang around for the main game at 7:30pm!
