Coach’s Column Round 21

As the NEAFL Home and Away season comes to an end it is important we finish as strong as we can. Last weekend’s games against ladder leaders’ Sydney Swans is a little reminder to the playing group of what we are capable of if we give a four-quarter consistent effort.

We were dominant in all areas of the game; from contested possession, uncontested possession, marks, tackles and inside forward 50s. As a result, we started to see some reward for effort.

Isaiah Farrell-Nelson made the long trip up from Tennant Creek for his first senior game and he had a shot on goal with his first touch but it faded at the end and went through for a point. Between Farrell-Nelson, Michael Hagan, Justin Cooper, Michael Mummery and Shannon Rioli, our smalls looked dangerous every time the ball hit the ground.

Daniel Lewis was marking everything that come his way and our defenders were solid all night, masterfully lead by Justin Beugelaar with 20 marks for the game.

Cameron Ilett was dominant in the middle, finishing the game with 35 disposals, 17 marks, 10 tackles, six clearances and four goals.

Today we take on the Southport Sharks for the second time this year. The Sharks are currently one up on us after defeating us at TIO stadium in Round 7. This game becomes a must win for the Sharks, who are looking to secure sixth spot and book themselves into the NEAFL finals. It will be a tough game for both sides.

Sunday night is also the NEAFL Awards night were the NEAFL Team of the Year and NEAFL MVP Award winner will be announced.

From Thunder’s perspective, we are hopeful a handful of players will feature in the team of the year, while Darren Ewing looks set to wrap up his fourth leading goalkicker award. Cameron Ilett is our best chance for NEAFL MVP after another impressive season.

Go Thunder.
