Coach’s Column Round 17

22.07.16 16:46

Tonight the NT Thunder senior team will walk in the footsteps of our heroes.

A celebration of Territory talent, pride and tradition, we will play our Heritage Round in the historical ochre and white guernsey, honouring Territory players past and present.

From the staple football family names to the stand out individuals, Territory football‘s individuals, teams and the tales that go with them will be remembered as we run out for our NEAFL Round 17 fixture.

I’m certain that in years to come people will talk about the magical side step of Shannon Rioli, the unbreakable effort of Cameron Ilett, the unbelievable left boot of Boof Ewing, each player today cementing their own brand in Territory football history.

As the Territory team, we want to give these players both past and present the honour they deserve and showcase our renowned Territory-style footy in our own backyard.

Today’s players have inherited the values and bond of the brotherhood that continues to drive the passion to pull on the NT jumper week in, week out.

I remember being a kid and watching players like Brian Stanislaus, Noel Long, Willie Rioli, Michael McLean and Jason Jones dominate against the might of AFL teams. After the games we would run onto the oval and look at these players, they were superheroes.

We can never compare to the rep teams of the 80’s and 90’s and nor should we, but today’s players are privileged to represent the NT Thunder Football Club and the NT, like those have done before us. And I am privileged to coach them.

Come down tonight and get behind our boys as we take on our rival, the Aspley Hornets. See the heritage jumper in full glory and hopefully the brilliance of the past shines bright at TIO Stadium.

Go Thunder!
